BELMONTE - PEDRO ÁLVARES DE CABRAL
Belmonte is a village in the District of Castelo Branco, in the province of Beira Baixa, a region of the Center and sub-region of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, with about 3,500 inhabitants.
Birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral. Belmonte Castle was declared a National Monument in 1927, Belmonte Castle is located on top of the hill and dates from the 13th century. It was the residence of the Cabral family (to which Pedro Álvares Cabral belonged), having been abandoned in the late seventeenth century due to a fire inside. In 1992 an amphitheater was built here that has been receiving varied shows over the years. In the former Menagem Tower is a permanent exhibition of several items found in excavations on site.
